Savvidis Greenhouses S.A. was founded in 2013 and had its first productive season in 2014-2015. Since its foundation, the company has specialized in the production of beefsteak hydroponic tomatoes, under the distinctive brand name Dramello Fresh, utilizing modern cultivation techniques on 20 acres in Prosotsani, Drama. ” We use a CHP assisted hydroponics system, utilizing carbon dioxide for carbonation, and we have implemented a cooling system that allows us to produce tomatoes continuously for 10 months a year,” says Thodoris Savvidis, Head Grower of the company. The produce is available in the country’s largest supermarket chains, as well as in the central vegetable markets of Thessaloniki and Athens, ensuring a wide presence throughout Greece. The company has Global GAP, GRASP, SPRING, and EcoVadis certifications, and all production is distributed to domestic markets. Although it operates mainly in Northern Greece, its tomatoes also reach the central vegetable market in Athens, ensuring their availability in many parts of the country.
1,500 tons of tomatoes from privately owned greenhouses
Despite its steady progress, the company has not expanded, but its production capacity has doubled since its establishment. “Our experience shows that the second quarter of the year is always the most productive, and we aim to extend this momentum to the other quarters,” adds the owner. The annual production of Savvidis Greenhouses now reaches 1,500 tons of high-quality beefsteak tomatoes, on land granted by the government. Production takes place exclusively in privately owned greenhouses, without contract farming agreements with third-party producers. The products are sold in double or single row carton boxes with paper dividers, all 100% recyclable.
From tomatoes to a variety of vegetables and fruits
Looking to the future, Savvidis Greenhouses plans to expand into other vegetable and fruit products, as hydroponic tomatoes seem to have reached saturation point. “Entering into new crops will allow us to diversify and continue our growth,” explains Mr. Savvidis. The company has taken advantage of a 2011 government subsidy in the past and does not rule out doing so again in the future, if conditions allow, although the procedures are time-consuming. With a steadfast vision for quality and sustainable production, Savvidis Greenhouses is a benchmark for Greek hydroponic production. From Drama to all of Greece, the company continues to expand its boundaries and prepare for new challenges.”
